Everton on Tenterhooks Due to Possible New Financial Charges
Everton and Nottingham Forest will find out today, Monday 15 January, if their accounts submitted last month are in breach of the English Premier League’s (EPL) financial rules.
The EPL’s profitability and sustainability regulations state that clubs can lose a maximum of £35 million per season, or £105 million over three years, before they face the risk of sanctions.
For the Toffees – who were previously whacked with a 10-point deduction on a similar charge last November, which they are now appealing – a new charge could be devastating. November’s sanction came about after an independent commission found the club lost up to £124.5 million in the 2021-22 season.
The deduction was the largest sporting sanction in EPL history, with many left shocked at the harsh punishment.
If the club have failed to improve their accounts, they may be looking at falling further down the EPL table, or expected pay a fine.
However, Everton manager Sean Dyche is unwilling to start speculating before they receive any official news. “You don’t know until you know,” Dyche told an international publication over the weekend.
“The last time, the news came out of the blue. I’ll explain further if and when the news comes through,” he added cryptically.
